How to make umlauts on a PC:
Hold down the Alt key next to the space bar on the keyboard and then press the numbers listed below the letter with the umlaut. Release the Alt key once you have finished typing in the numbers and the German character should appear.

Permitted online dictionaries
Remember these dictionaries can be helpful but also harmful in that I expect you to use the vocabulary taught in class unless directed otherwise.
- www.dict.cc - good site for vocab but no verb conjugation like dict.leo.org or canoo.net
- dict.leo.org - This website is a great tool to look up words German to English or English to German. Tip: do not select the first word it gives you. Remember, many words have many meanings... just like in English.
- canoo.net - use for verb conjugation and other grammatical issues
- dict.tu-chemnitz.de/ - Search through more than 900,000 translations with examples and hints, explanations, synonyms, sayings, aphorisms, and quotations in English and German. Browse lists for special topics. Listen to German and English pronunciations spoken by native speakers.
